Because we love the Old Garden Rose charm and fragrance of the relatively
new David Austin English Roses and are licensed propagators
English Roses combine the fullness of the blooms and sweet perfume
of the antique roses with the Repeats flowering quality and brighter
colouring of the modern roses (achieved through crossing old roses
with the red and yellow China roses and modern roses). English Roses
are generally easier to grow and more disease resistant than Hybrid
Tea roses, but most varieties do require pruning in Spring, deadheading
to a good leaf bud after each bloom flush and frequent fertilizing
and watering to ensure a healthy plant and repitition of blooms.
We find that several English Roses are emerging as very reliable
for the coastal climate and are listed among our favorite varieties
below.
While some English Roses, such as Abraham Darby, can be
used as short climbers if left unpruned, we have found that they
do better as medium sized shrubs, thus providing more flowers on
bushier shrubs at a height from which their special fragrance can
be frequently enjoyed. English Roses are generally cold hardy to
zone 5 but their canes may freeze during severe winters. Mulching
is recommended in colder climates. Many of the shorter varieties
are suitable for growing in containers if well cared for. [See codes
and key at end of list.] They are not shade tolerant.
Our Favourites Abraham Darby, Benjamin Britten, Charles Darwin, Graham Thomas, Mary Rose, Morning Mist, Pat
Austin, Spirit of Freedom and William
Shakespeare 2000. In
addition, there are many newer introductions, which we have not
tested sufficiently to rate their overall beauty, vigour and disease
resistance.
Sorry, we are sold out of many varieties until spring. However the varieties still in stock are all good varieties.
Roses
are available while quantities last. Varieties marked
as 'sold out' may be available again next year. Remember to order early.
Our prices may vary from season to season depending on the plant size. See
the bottom of this list for Key.
