Responding to
a need for a greater variety of cold tolerant roses, particularly
the in red shades, the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture set about
to hybridize a new type of shrub and short climbing roses that can
survive in the colder parts of the world. Some of these are almost
entirely from Rugosa ancestors, while others were developed from the
cold hardy Kordesii roses, hybridized in Germany in the late 1940's.
While good for the cold climates and generally disease resistant,
we find that some of the non-rugosa type Explorers, parkland and modern
varieties are a bit prone to blackspot in our humid and rainy coastal
climate.
